My secret to standing out as a designer

I recently wrapped up filming an Instagram reel that took me just under 4 hours to create.

Now, you might be wondering why I’m sharing this with you. Well, let me explain...

When I shared some behind-the-scenes snippets on my story, I got a ton of responses. Most people were excited to see the final product, but a few were curious why I spent so much time on a single video.

This got me thinking: Why do I do what I do, the way I do? (Seriously, try saying that five times fast 🤣) Reflecting on my journey over the past five years, I’ve encountered my fair share of content theft. From people reposting my work on their Fiverr accounts to attract clients, to others selling my design templates as their own. (Fortunately, I have a legal team to handle this now). Because of this, I’ve had to find ways to adapt and stand out.

One way I’ve done that is by putting in the effort.

See, effort isn’t something that can be easily copied and pasted. And that’s why I’m willing to spend 4 hours on an Instagram video if that’s what it takes for me to stand out. I know this might sound a bit silly to some of you, but go read Turning Pro by Steven Pressfield.

In that book, he talks about how you should approach your job, business, or career the same way an athlete approaches their sport.

One thing all the best athletes have in common is that they are willing to outwork their competitors. Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not trying to push this toxic “hustle & grind” message, where you never have time for anything outside work. What I’m trying to emphasise is that effort is the best differentiator.

When you’re willing to put in more effort, you’ll stand out, and this principle applies universally.

  • Put more effort into client relationships, and you’ll get better testimonials.

  • Put more effort into your social posts, and you’ll grow quicker.

  • Put more effort into your proposals, and you’ll land more clients.

Not everyone wants to hear this because it’s not the easiest or quickest route. It requires sacrifices, but it’s also the most rewarding.

As you continue striving to make your business stand out, remember that hard work and effort are your secret weapons.

Chat next week,

Abi 😊
