Something that’s been on my mind a lot recently is why some designers succeed in the freelance world while others don't.
Sometimes it's so baffling to see a talented and intelligent designer grapple with getting their business started.
While, other designers, who may not be as technically skilled, achieve success because they just do the things that need to be done.
So, the question is… what do successful designers have or do that the others don't?
Well, it's not about technical design skills.
And, it's not about a lack of information.
Instead, I believe it comes down to the individual rather than the designer.
By this, I mean their personality traits, habits, and mindset.
I won't resort to the cliché "hard work beats talent" (even though I just did), because I acknowledge there are other factors at play.
But the point I want to make in this newsletter is, it's you vs. you.
A lot of people are their own worst enemies, obstructing their own success due to self-sabotaging habits, thoughts, and actions.
And if they could just learn to conquer themselves, they’d be on the road to achieving their goals.
So, if you can relate to this, what should you do?
Well something that’s helped me in the past is negative visualisation, now I know they might sound counter productive or a bit weird but hear me out…
Running from something you fear is an even more powerful force than working toward something you desire.
So, I personally find it helpful to write down my 5-year vision if everything goes perfectly.
This means if I stick to my habits, am constant and achieve my goals. (essentially if I were to be the best version of myself for the next 5 years).
Then, I write down what my life would look like in 5 years if I let self sabotage and complacency set in. If I let bad habits control each day and if I never achieved my potential.
By visualising both possibilities, it not only shows you what you’re working towards, but also can light a fire beneath your feet to take action because you have something to run from.
I have one ask of you if you are someone currently in this self sabotaging loop…
Stop the mindless TikTok scrolling.
Start implementing daily habits that make you feel good.
and don’t take the opportunity you have to build your perfect future for granted.
Have a good week!
Abi 🙂
